2005 Liga Mexicana de Beisbol Cards

      In 2005, La Liga Mexicana de Beisbol, known to most gringos as the "Mexican League", began a big marketing push, thanks to a new league president, and part of that effort included a set of league-produced baseball cards (tarjetas de beisbol). I managed to pick up 55 cards from the set on Mercado Libre, and after three weeks of shipping, they have finally arrived. Until I can get them all scanned and documented, here is a sample:

       Oddly, the packs don't mention how many cards were originally contained, but they came to me 8-9 cards to a pack (already opened, it was a lot I bought, the wrappers were just a bonus). Also, the cards don't seem to be numbered. The card backs do show uniform numbers. However, I have no idea how many cards are in the set.

------18 December 2011 UPDATE ------

     Between the cards I have in-hand and those owned by my new Mexican Super Collector friend, Arturo, we can account for 87 cards in the set.  Neither of us knows how many cards the set holds, but I would say it is probably at least 154 (that would be 11 cards for each of the 14 teams covered in the set, based on our knowing of 11 cards for the Potros de Tijuana).  But that is an educated guess based on most sets usually having the same number of cards per team. The teams from Saltillo and Tabasco were not included in the set.  As the cards don't have individual card numbers, I listed them using the first two letters of the team name and the uniform numbers listed on the reverse of the cards.

    Last July, Arturo had provided me with a complete checklist for the set, and while I updated the listings at SCF, I forgot to update the blog.  Here is the complete checklist, courtesy of Benjamin Sandoval (the rare combination of Mexican pro baseball player AND baseball card collector).  The numbers are arbitrary, they're just sorted by team.  While this fills out a lot of teams, the representation is still surprisingly uneven, and the set total particularly odd at 207 cards.
