Checklists Translations: 1990 Chinese Professional Baseball League

     In the past couple of weeks, I found some resources for information on older baseball card sets from Taiwan.  The main resource is this blog and accompanying album:

     Everything is in Chinese, so I've had to make liberal use of Google Translate, but beginning with his first post, the author has been posting on the history of baseball cards issued in Taiwan since 1990, just after the Chinese Professional Baseball League was formed.   Thanks to this wonderful blog, I am now aware of some 60+ sets for the CPBL, the short-lived Taiwan Major League as well as the Chinese Taipei national team.  Now the door has opened to a new world of cards, I am attempting to assemble checklists for all of the sets referenced and add them to the SportsCardForum.com Inventory Manager.



     I'll be posting my progress here, both to help spread the information, as well as to request help with filling out the checklists.  In most cases, I'll refer to the albums for card numbering, and where sets do not have card numbers, I'll probably just use the ordering from the album where scans are available.  I have been able to work out the Roman alphabetic version of lots of the Taiwanese players, and the foreign players are usually the easiest to work out.

     In my research effort, I've made a lot of use of Yahoo! Taiwan Auctions; here is their baseball card category:

     The other main auction/marketplace site for Taiwan appears to be Ruten, here is their baseball card category:

     While Google Translate might be able to let me hear how the names sound, it seems very few are actually written in English as Google transliterates them.  As far as I can determine, there is no online resource with historical CPBL rosters listed in English.  Baseball Reference doesn't even have the team standings included in their system as yet, so no help there, but a lot of the player translations did come from the BR Bullpen, despite there being no rosters or stats in the BR system.

     I've started with the first official CPBL set from 1990.

The scans are a bit misleading.  The cards are actually plastic and have rounded white borders (very similar to the PermaGraphics cards from the early 1980s) as seen in this post on the Japanese Baseball Card Blog.

       Below is the checklist as I've managed to construct so far.  As mentioned previously, the cards have been numbered in the order they appear in the album, but the actual set is unnumbered.  I will update this checklist as I find good English versions for each player.  If anyone would be willing to assist, that would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks to Mr. Westbay over at JapaneseBaseball.com, with data from one KT Chiu of the mostly defunct TWBaseball.info, and to Ralph Pearce for supplying a checklist that let me fill in that final card to complete the checklist.  Many names have been updated to more recent spelling.
